Back-to-School Guide: Boarding School’s First 30 Days

Families who consider boarding school for their student are often seeking a meaningful opportunity for growth and positive change. Whether it’s developing stronger study habits, finding a supportive new friend group, exploring extracurriculars not available at home, or building interpersonal skills through shared living with peers from around the world—boarding school represents a fresh start.

This sense of opportunity often comes with a natural dose of anxiety, as change can feel both exciting and unfamiliar. At Oak Hill Academy, students are guided through this transition with care, and most quickly find their footing as they begin to thrive in a new environment designed to support their success.

The first 30 days at a boarding school can feel like a whirlwind—but they’re also some of the most formative. From new routines to new relationships, this first month lays the foundation for academic growth, personal development, and the unique sense of community that boarding life offers. Here’s what students and families can expect during this crucial adjustment period.

Settling In: Dorm Life and Daily Routines

Within the first week, students begin establishing their new home base—learning dorm rules, getting to know their roommates, and adjusting to shared living. Structured schedules help ease the transition, with clear expectations around wake-up times, meals, study hours, and lights-out.

At Oak Hill Academy, dorm supervision and student support is provided by a team of “dorm parents,” Residential Life staff who, in addition to ensuring structure and organization, also provide mentorship and help students navigate relationships and problem-solve.

Building a Support Network

During the initial weekend move-in and orientation activities, students quickly meet their advisors, teachers, and dorm staff—key figures who will guide and support them throughout the year. Orientation programs often include team-building exercises and community traditions that encourage connection and help students feel a part of something bigger from day one.

As a small boarding school with approximately 150 students, Oak Hill Academy offers an environment where every student is seen, known, and valued. New students quickly discover that they matter—and that their presence contributes to the fabric of the school community.

With over 25 student clubs, 10 athletic teams, and a steady calendar of off-campus trips, students form overlapping circles of friendships that help eliminate the pressure of cliques. This inclusive, activity-rich environment encourages connection across interests and grade levels, making it easier for students to feel at home and engaged from the start.

Oak Hill Academy’s rural location further enhances the school’s strong sense of community. As a 100% boarding school, all students live on campus seven days a week—there are no day students coming and going. This creates a vibrant, fully engaged campus life, especially on weekends, when students participate in a wide range of on-campus events and off-campus trips.

The result is an active and inclusive social environment where students grow deeply invested in one another and learn to live in sync with their peers. This shared rhythm fosters close friendships, personal accountability, and a genuine sense of belonging.

Academic Onboarding

Course placement, syllabus reviews, and the first round of assignments all happen within the first two weeks. This period is about more than academics—it’s a time to develop consistent study habits, ask for help early, and understand the resources available, such as the academic focus period, tutoring, or extra-help office hours.

Most of our faculty also live on campus with their families and make it a point to be visible and accessible both in and outside of class, encouraging proactive communication and academic accountability.

Getting Involved: Clubs, Sports, and Activities

Extracurriculars come alive in the first month. Whether it’s trying out for a team, joining the equestrian program, signing up for theater, or attending student government meetings, students begin discovering their interests and building confidence through participation.

These activities not only build friendships but also teach time management, leadership, and resilience.

Emotional Growth and Independence

Living away from home comes with both excitement and occasional homesickness. Oak Hill Academy is intentional about helping students navigate this balance—offering emotional support services and encouraging self-reflection, independence, and responsibility in daily life. By the end of the first 30 days, many students report feeling more confident and capable than they imagined possible.

At Oak Hill Academy, students are given the opportunity to redefine themselves in meaningful, lasting ways. True growth happens outside of one’s comfort zone—and the transition to boarding school not only sets the tone for a successful academic year but often serves as a springboard for lifelong personal development.
