Celebrating Leadership: Welcoming Michael Burns and Mike Rodgers to Oak Hill Academy

Oak Hill Academy is excited to announce the appointment of two esteemed leaders to new roles within our community. Michael Burns has been named Assistant Head of School, and Mike Rodgers has been promoted to Associate Head of School for Enrollment and Development. Their extensive experience and deep connections to Oak Hill promise to drive our school’s growth and success.

Michael Burns: Assistant Head of School

Michael Burns rejoins Oak Hill Academy with a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience. Burns previously served at Oak Hill from 2013 to 2020, contributing significantly to the school’s culture and community.

Most recently, he excelled as the Dean of Students and Head Coach for the Lady Knights Basketball team at Providence Academy in Johnson City, TN. This experience provided a unique perspective while also deepening his proven record of accomplishment in fostering student growth and development.

Leadership and Vision

Burns’ passion for academics, athletics, and personal faith underpins his commitment to holistic student development. His return to Oak Hill renews his dedication to fostering a nurturing and enriching environment for all students and faculty.

Micah Kurtz, Oak Hill’s incoming President, expressed his confidence in Burns: “When the position of Assistant Head of School became available, Mr. Burns was the first person I called. His expertise and leadership will contribute to the continued success and growth of Oak Hill Academy.”

Dr. Michael Groves, OHA President from 2002-2024, emphasized Burns’ character: “[Michael Burns is] a person of high character who exemplifies the core values we cherish at Oak Hill Academy.”

Steve Smith, former Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach, added, “He is the perfect choice for this position because of his experience at Oak Hill for many years and his desire to help students reach their full potential in the classroom as well as in their daily lives.”

Burns’ Perspective

Michael Burns is excited to return to Oak Hill, stating, “Being respectful of Oak Hill’s tradition while building for the future is…our highest commitment. I appreciate this opportunity and am excited to be back at The Hill. Go Warriors!”

Mike Rodgers: Associate Head of School for Enrollment and Development

Mike Rodgers, an Oak Hill Academy alumnus, has a robust education and enrollment management background. In addition to teaching Social Studies at Oak Hill from 2004-2014, he also launched a national-level girls’ basketball program. Rodgers then transitioned to school leadership, establishing and directing the Admissions Office from 2014 to 2019.

In 2019, he took a position at a large private school in Florida. There, he served as Board Admissions Manager, overseeing one of the nation’s largest international and domestic boarding enrollments.

Leadership and Vision

Rodgers’ admissions expertise and relationship-building skills are invaluable assets to Oak Hill. His dedication to understanding and meeting the needs of students and families will help Oak Hill continue to flourish as a top boarding school.

Steve Smith praised Rodgers: “Mike brings a wealth of dedicated experience and knowledge in his new role… I fully expect Oak Hill Academy to flourish as one of the top boarding schools nationally with Mike.”

Micah Kurtz highlighted Rodgers’ unique skills: “Mike Rodgers is truly the best in the world at what he does… There is no better person than Mike to share all the positive benefits Oak Hill Academy will bring to the next generation.”

Dr. Michael Groves added: “Mike Rodgers is a well-recognized professional in boarding school enrollment. A gifted builder of relationships, Mr. Rodgers understands the needs of students and families seeking boarding at an independent school. His experience internationally also dovetails well with Oak Hill’s legacy.”

Rodgers’ Perspective

Rodgers expressed his enthusiasm: “I’m thrilled to continue to grow at a place that I consider my home. I am grateful for the chance to team up with world-class colleagues and to play a role in forging an exciting future for Oak Hill Academy. I’m excited to contribute a unique perspective of both knowing full well what makes our school and community special but also with a strong sense of the opportunities for growth.”
