Dr. Uju’s Oak Hill basketball career is impressive—he played on the school’s 2013-14 team, helping them achieve a 41-4 record and become ranked No. 3 nationally.
But Uju’s experience doesn’t stop there. His post-Oak Hill achievements exemplify our school’s transformative impact on its students.
Arriving at Oak Hill Academy: A New Path
Jeff arrived at Oak Hill Academy as a rising 10th grader from Bolingbrook, Illinois, with his identity firmly centered on his basketball dreams.
However, Oak Hill’s structured and goal-oriented environment soon expanded his horizons beyond the court. The Academy’s unique approach fostered Jeff’s development beyond being an athlete.
Oak Hill Academy’s focus on a combination of academics and character-building helped shape Uju into a well-rounded individual prepared for future challenges—setting the stage for his remarkable journey from a basketball-focused teenager to a successful medical professional.
Becoming a Scholar and Leader
From there, Uju’s journey at Oak Hill Academy was marked by significant growth—on and off the court.
He progressed through the basketball program, starting on the White Team, advancing to a leadership role on the Red Team, and ultimately earning a spot on the prestigious Gold Team in his senior year.
This athletic advancement paralleled his academic and personal development.
A defining moment in Jeff’s Oak Hill experience was his induction into the National Honor Society during his junior year. This achievement signaled a profound shift in his priorities, emphasizing his evolution from a solely basketball-focused athlete to a well-rounded student-leader.
Jeff reflects, “The value of extra work and realizing that I had the capacity to do the extra work it took to meet my goals are some of the biggest lessons I take from my Oak Hill experience.”
Overcoming Challenges at Bowling Green University
After graduating from Oak Hill, Jeff continued his journey of growth at Bowling Green University. He maintained his commitment to athletic and academic excellence, consistently earning All-Conference Academic honors.
However, Jeff’s college experience wasn’t without its challenges. A season-ending injury in his junior year, coupled with the demands of his Biology major, put his resilience to the test.
Rather than deterring Jeff, these obstacles reinforced his dedication to both sports and academics.
The foundation laid at Oak Hill proved invaluable during this time. Jeff attributes his ability to persevere to his Oak Hill experience, stating, “Oak Hill Academy is where I first understood the value of doing the hard things. Six a.m. workouts, homework after exhausting practices, competing every day on the court—it all made me a more disciplined person.”
This discipline, instilled at Oak Hill, equipped Jeff to navigate the rigors of college life and overcome significant setbacks.
The Pivotal Decision: Medical School Over Professional Basketball
After graduating from Bowling Green, Jeff faced a critical crossroads: pursue professional basketball, return for another year of eligibility, or embark on a medical career.
Drawing on the lessons learned at Oak Hill, Jeff chose the path of higher education.
In 2020, he enrolled in the prestigious dental program at Marquette University School of Dentistry.
Over his four-year program and rotations, Jeff earned his doctorate and established himself as a prominent voice in the dental industry. He creatively built a personal brand as “The Tall Dentist.”
Today, Dr. Uju practices at Henderson Modern Dentistry in Nevada, where he has quickly achieved success in his chosen field.
