Giving Back: How Oak Hill Students Make a Difference Through Service

Each November, Oak Hill Academy celebrates gratitude, compassion, and the meaningful ways students give back to others. Service is woven into daily life on The Hill from community care to outreach in the local neighborhood helping students grow in character, confidence, and purpose.

These experiences remind us that student leadership begins with serving, and that personal growth is strengthened when students learn to care for those around them.

A Week of Thanks: A Campus Tradition

The third week of November has become a cherished tradition at Oak Hill Academy our Week of Thanks. Alongside the public fundraising campaign built around this theme, the week gives us space to slow down and reinforce the importance of service, reflection, and gratitude.

As students prepare for Thanksgiving Break and look forward to our traditional formal Thanksgiving meal on campus, this period builds a sense of positive momentum and genuine community care. It’s a natural moment to recognize the character development that has taken place during the first stretch of the school year, especially as students return home to reconnect with family and friends.

Service That Builds Character and Connection

Throughout the fall, Oak Hill students engage in a wide range of service opportunities that support both our boarding school community and our neighbors in Carroll County. One of the most beloved traditions is partnering with the local recreation department for youth soccer. Our students spend afternoons teaching elementary-aged players fundamental skills and modeling sportsmanship showing younger athletes what servant leadership looks like in action.

Students also volunteer weekly at local elementary schools, reading with younger students and assisting teachers in their classrooms. They support school fundraisers and fall festivals, offering their time, energy, and encouragement to help bring community events to life.

On campus, peer tutoring allows students to practice student leadership in meaningful ways, strengthening both confidence and academic support among peers.

Community Outreach With Heart

This season, Oak Hill partnered with Young’s Chapel to bless the Family Resource Center with Care Bags for families experiencing difficult transitions. These bags were filled with essential items meant to offer comfort and encouragement during challenging times. It was a heartfelt project one that reaffirmed Oak Hill’s commitment to community care and servant leadership.

In a touching “reverse outreach,” Young’s Chapel also surprised our students with an off-campus afternoon to attend a live performance of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. The girls enjoyed a joyful experience full of laughter, fellowship, and a chance to celebrate the season together an important reminder that gratitude moves in both directions.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Service learning at Oak Hill goes far beyond completing volunteer hours. Students learn how to plan, organize, and lead initiatives from raising money for child abuse prevention to volunteering at local awareness walks and runs. These opportunities help students translate character development into real-world impact.

Faculty and staff guide students through reflection, emphasizing empathy, responsibility, and the value of contributing to a community. These conversations highlight that personal growth is a central part of the boarding school experience at Oak Hill, right alongside academic achievement.

A Community That Inspires Purpose

Living in a close-knit environment means students regularly see kindness in action whether in the dorms, during activities, or simply in day-to-day interactions. As students serve together, they build lasting friendships and discover that they can make a meaningful difference, no matter their age or background.

Service becomes more than an expectation; it becomes a mindset. Students learn that offering support, showing compassion, and leading with gratitude are powerful forms of student leadership.

At Oak Hill Academy, service shapes who we are and who our students become.
