How Much Does Boarding School Cost? A Transparent Look at Oak Hill Academy Tuition and Value

For many families considering boarding school, one of the first questions is also one of the most important:

How much does boarding school cost, and is it worth the investment?

These are fair questions. Choosing a boarding school is one of the most significant educational decisions a family can make, and understanding both the cost and the value is essential.

At Oak Hill Academy, we believe in being transparent about tuition while helping families understand exactly what their investment provides. When viewed in the context of the education, mentorship, structure, and opportunities students receive, boarding school becomes much more than simply paying for a place to attend classes. It becomes an investment in a young person’s future.

Oak Hill Academy’s Cost and What It Includes

For the academic year, the total cost for domestic boarding students is $51,834. This amount includes tuition, room, board, student fees, and the new student uniform package. Families also receive tuition refund insurance as part of their enrollment fees, providing an added measure of financial protection should unforeseen circumstances arise.

For students requiring an F-1 Visa, please see international tuition and fees. The Academy requires all students to have a credit or debit card for shopping, travel incidentals, and other personal expenses.

Please note that tuition refund insurance is subject to specific terms, conditions, exclusions, and coverage limitations. For complete information regarding eligibility and coverage, please contact your Oak Hill Academy Admissions Consultant or email admissions@oak-hill.net.

While tuition represents a significant investment, it is important to understand everything included in the cost. Unlike many educational experiences that charge separately for housing, meals, supervision, activities, and student services, boarding school combines these elements into one comprehensive experience designed to develop the whole student academically, socially, emotionally, and personally.

Academic preparation and support: Students benefit from college preparatory academics, small class sizes, individualized attention from experienced teachers, structured study time, academic support, and personalized college counseling. Qualifying students may also receive additional support through the Applied Learning Strategies program at no additional cost.

Residential life and daily care: Students live in residence halls seven days a week and receive daily meals through Oak Hill Academy’s partnership with NEXDINE Hospitality. Faculty members provide supervision, mentoring, and support throughout the day and evening.

Athletics and student involvement: Students have access to elite-level basketball development, a broad range of developmental and seasonal sports, clubs, leadership opportunities, and student activities.

Experiences beyond the classroom: Oak Hill also offers off-campus, chaperoned weekend trips and character and life-skills education through the Residence Life curriculum and other programming.

Rather than paying separately for these experiences, families receive a fully immersive educational environment that supports students academically, socially, emotionally, and personally.

A Small, Personalized Residential Community

One of the greatest advantages of attending a small boarding school is that education does not stop when the final class ends.

At Oak Hill Academy, learning continues during meals, evening study sessions, athletic practices, residence hall life, student leadership opportunities, weekend activities, and everyday interactions with classmates and faculty.

With approximately 150 students living together on campus, every student becomes a valued member of the community rather than simply another face in the hallway. Small class sizes allow teachers to understand each student’s strengths, challenges, and goals while providing the support and encouragement needed for academic growth.

Faculty members serve not only as teachers but also as advisors, coaches, dorm parents, and mentors. Students develop meaningful relationships with adults who know them well and are invested in both their academic success and personal growth.

Students are not simply part of a system. They are known personally by their teachers, advisors, coaches, and mentors.

Living together on a boarding school campus also creates opportunities for students to develop independence, responsibility, and meaningful relationships. Through the Honor Code, leadership opportunities, and daily interactions with peers and faculty, students learn the importance of integrity, accountability, respect, and personal responsibility.

The residential experience challenges students to grow while providing the guidance and support necessary for that growth to occur. That level of individual attention is difficult to replicate in much larger educational settings.

Preparing Students for College, Life, and Long-Term Success

Families often ask what separates boarding school from a traditional high school experience.

The answer is straightforward: independence with support.

Through daily boarding school life, students gradually learn to manage their schedules, balance academics and extracurricular activities, resolve conflicts respectfully, live successfully with roommates, develop healthy study habits, advocate for themselves, and become responsible members of a diverse community. Along the way, they build confidence, resilience, independence, and personal responsibility.

These are exactly the kinds of life skills colleges hope incoming freshmen already possess. Because boarding students practice these skills every day during high school, many transition to college with greater confidence and maturity.

Oak Hill Academy prepares students for success beyond high school by combining college preparatory academics with personalized guidance, athletic opportunities, and strong adult mentorship.

Students learn how to balance commitments, set goals, overcome challenges, and develop the confidence needed for college and life.

The value of a boarding school education extends far beyond one academic year. Students leave Oak Hill Academy with greater academic confidence, stronger study habits, personal responsibility, leadership skills, time-management abilities, independence, lasting friendships, college readiness, and character grounded in integrity and accountability.

These qualities continue to benefit students long after graduation.

A boarding school education provides students with daily opportunities to practice the skills they will need in college and beyond. The combination of academic challenge, structured independence, mentorship, and community involvement helps students grow into confident young adults prepared for future success.

Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Oak Hill Academy offers students opportunities to grow through athletics, leadership, student activities, residential life, and daily interaction with classmates from around the world.

These experiences help students develop skills and relationships that extend beyond academics and prepare them to participate confidently in college and future communities.

Athletic Development

Oak Hill Academy has earned an international reputation for developing student-athletes without sacrificing academic excellence.

Nearly 80 percent of our students participate in athletics, creating a culture where ambition, discipline, and teamwork are valued both on the field and in the classroom.

Whether competing in basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, cross country, track and field, cheerleading, or other sports, students benefit from experienced coaching, organized facilities, strength and conditioning programs, and a structured daily schedule that allows athletics and academics to complement one another.

Unlike many elite athletic environments, Oak Hill Academy emphasizes developing the complete student, not simply the athlete.

A Global Learning Environment

Today’s colleges and employers value students who can collaborate with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

Oak Hill Academy offers that experience every day.

Nearly 40 percent of our student body is international, representing countries from around the world. Students learn to appreciate different perspectives, build lifelong friendships across cultures, and develop communication skills that prepare them for an increasingly interconnected world.

This kind of daily global experience cannot easily be recreated in most traditional high school settings.

Financial Planning, Payment Options, and Tuition Discounts

Every family’s financial situation is unique.

Oak Hill Academy understands that tuition represents a significant commitment, which is why our Admissions Office works closely with families to explain costs, payment options, and available opportunities. The goal is to help families make informed decisions while determining whether an Oak Hill education is the right fit for their student.

We encourage families to have an open conversation with our admissions team early in the enrollment process to discuss available payment plans and answer any questions about tuition or the overall investment.

At Oak Hill Academy, we believe that a boarding school education should be within reach for as many qualified families as possible. Through our Tuition Discount Program, we work with families to help bridge smaller gaps in affordability while maintaining a responsible approach to educational financing.

In a typical year, nearly 60 percent of our families receive some level of tuition assistance through this program. Rather than awarding a limited pool of scholarship funds, Oak Hill Academy evaluates each family individually. Our Tuition Discount Committee carefully considers a family’s demonstrated financial need, overall circumstances, and ability to responsibly manage the remaining cost of attendance.

This personalized approach allows us to determine a tuition discount that is appropriate for each qualified family’s situation. Tuition discounts are generally partial awards intended to make an Oak Hill Academy education more affordable. They should not be viewed as full-tuition or half-tuition scholarships.

To ensure that tuition assistance is awarded fairly and responsibly, families requesting consideration complete a confidential Tuition Discount Application. The application is designed to provide a clear picture of a family’s financial circumstances and to help us determine an appropriate level of assistance.

Just as importantly, our process helps ensure that families are not encouraged to make a financial commitment that would create an unreasonable financial burden.

If you believe your family may qualify for tuition assistance, we encourage you to request a Tuition Discount Application by contacting the Office of Admissions at admissions@oak-hill.net. Our admissions team is happy to discuss the process, answer your questions, and help you explore whether an Oak Hill Academy education is financially attainable for your family.

The Bottom Line

Boarding school is undeniably a significant financial investment, but it is also an investment in a student’s future.

At Oak Hill Academy, families are investing in far more than classes and credits. They are investing in an educational community where students are challenged academically, supported personally, encouraged to grow in character, and prepared for success in college and beyond.

When you consider the individualized attention, residential experience, college preparation, athletic opportunities, leadership development, and lifelong relationships students gain, the value of an Oak Hill Academy education extends well beyond the tuition itself.

The decision to attend boarding school is a meaningful one. Families should carefully consider not only the cost, but also the environment, opportunities, relationships, and personal growth their student will experience.
