At Oak Hill Academy, we’ve always believed that giving—no matter the size—is powerful. Every gift strengthens the foundation of a school community built to guide young people toward independence, confidence, and lifelong success.
Across the United States, independent schools like ours depend on more than tuition alone. Private education often depends on families, alumni, and friends stepping in to help fill the gaps. Donations and volunteer time sustain programs that tuition can’t fully cover—scholarships, campus enhancements, and community service opportunities that shape a richer education for every student.
Oak Hill has been preparing students for life and college since the nineteenth century. As a small preparatory school, we believe schools teach best when they have the resources to meet every learner where they are. Community support—whether through time, advocacy, or gifts—ensures that promise continues, giving our school students the opportunities and guidance they deserve.
How Private and Independent Schools Are Funded (and Why Donations Matter)

Families often assume that tuition alone sustains their child’s private school. In reality, tuition covers only part of what it takes to give school students a well-rounded education and a supportive community. Independent schools rely on additional support—through gifts of time, resources, and financial contributions—to keep their programs strong and accessible.
Here at Oak Hill, small acts of generosity have a big impact. Donations help fund student scholarships, ensure classrooms are equipped for hands-on learning, and support community service projects that teach students to give back. They keep our dorms welcoming and safe for a diverse student body that calls campus home all year, while also supporting the unique needs of our day students.
But across the country, boarding schools like Oak Hill face additional costs beyond academics: residence life staffing, weekend activities, and the upkeep that comes with being a true home for teenagers. Even the best independent schools can’t consistently deliver these experiences on tuition dollars alone.
And the value goes far beyond academics. The strongest schools teach more than math or history—they build character, confidence, and resilience. These schools offer leadership opportunities, vibrant arts programs, and outdoor adventures that prepare students for life.
Every contribution—large or small—helps maintain these opportunities and ensures that this style of education remains available to every student who needs it, not just those who can pay full tuition.
The Power of Small Gifts to Schools Like Oak Hill

When you make a donation—whether it’s $20, $200, or more—to Oak Hill Academy, you become an integral part of the Oak Hill community. Every gift matters because it fuels opportunities that improve the school’s mission for our close-knit student body.
Small contributions often fund the details that make a difference in a student’s day: updated books in the library, art supplies for the studio, lab equipment for hands-on science projects, or after-school tutoring sessions that give one more layer of support.
In a 100% boarding school environment like ours, even modest gifts can cover personal enrichment experiences—weekend outings, leadership workshops, or wellness programs—that help students grow beyond the classroom.
But more importantly, each gift connects directly to a student’s journey—removing barriers, expanding horizons, and ensuring that every young person on The Hill feels seen, supported, and equipped to succeed.
New Charitable Deduction Rules: How They Make Giving Easier

Generosity has always mattered to schools like Oak Hill—but now, recent changes to federal tax law mean that your giving may benefit you as well as our students.
For the first time ever, all U.S. taxpayers—whether you itemize your taxes or not—can deduct charitable donations on their federal tax returns.
Here’s what’s new: a provision in the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill” allows charitable contributions to qualifying nonprofits, including independent schools, to be deducted on federal tax returns even if you don’t itemize your deductions.
A charitable deduction lowers the amount of income you’re taxed on—it’s not the same as tax credits, which reduce the tax you owe dollar-for-dollar. Until now, you needed to file an itemized deduction to claim charitable giving on your tax return.
Starting in 2026, you won’t have to.
Starting next year, charitable contributions up to $1,000 ($2,000 for couples filing jointly) to qualifying organizations can be deducted—even if they take the standard deduction and don’t itemize their return.
90% of taxpayers don’t itemize. Before this change, that meant most people couldn’t claim a deduction for their charitable giving unless they gave large amounts. Now, with this permanent adjustment, nearly everyone who gives can benefit—while supporting the causes they love.
So, are donations to private schools tax-deductible? Yes—when a school is recognized as a qualifying organization, as Oak Hill Academy is. That means every contribution, large or small, can make an impact on campus while offering you potential tax savings under the new rules.
Combined with the difference your gift makes here on The Hill, this adjustment makes it easier than ever to give confidently—knowing you’re strengthening opportunities for our students while making the most of your generosity.
Why It’s Worth Giving Now
