Supporting Mental Health at Boarding Schools: Oak Hill Academy’s Holistic Approach

At Oak Hill Academy, we understand that the high school years are a time of tremendous growth—intellectually, emotionally, and personally. For students living away from home, those years also bring unique challenges: learning independence, managing responsibilities, and discovering who they are

While Oak Hill is not a therapeutic school and does not offer clinical mental health treatment, we take seriously the importance of supporting the whole student as they navigate this formative season of life.

A Community Built on Relationships

Our strength lies in our relationships. Oak Hill’s small, close-knit community allows faculty and staff to truly know each student—not only as a learner, but as a person. Living and learning together fosters meaningful connections, trust, and understanding.

These relationships become the foundation for support as students face the normal pressures of adolescence, from academic expectations to social growth and preparation for life beyond high school.

Layers of Support: Academic and Residential Life

There are many levels of support available to our students—some very visible and others woven into the daily rhythms of our community. The most direct level of support comes through both our School Counselor’s Office and our Residential Life Staff.

In the school setting, our School Counselor helps students navigate academic pressure, time management, and future planning. From course counseling to college guidance, our School Counselor, in partnership with our Student Support Specialist, helps ensure students’ needs are met during the academic day and beyond the classroom.

Our Residential Life Staff provides the other half of this wrap-around model. From our Deans, students receive pastoral care in navigating challenges and solving problems. Meanwhile, our resident managers—often referred to as “dorm parents”—live in the dormitories alongside students. This enables a deeply relational approach to supervision, mentoring, and daily encouragement, ensuring that support is ever-present, personal, and grounded in care.

Support can also come from less obvious sources in a close-knit community. Most of our teachers and staff live on campus and interact with students organically—through off-campus trips, on-campus social activities, meals in the dining hall, and daily campus life. These informal interactions create fertile ground for mentoring and modeling positive behavior. It is often through these bonds, formed outside of the classroom, that our students feel most supported and seen.

A Holistic Approach to Student Growth

At Oak Hill, support doesn’t come from a therapist’s office—it comes from intentional relationships, daily structure, and opportunities for reflection and personal development. Our approach is holistic, focusing on growth in four key areas:

  • Emotional Growth: Encouraging self-awareness, resilience, and confidence in handling life’s challenges.
  • Interpersonal Growth: Building empathy, communication, and collaboration through shared living and learning experiences.
  • Executive Functioning: Helping students develop organization, time management, and decision-making skills essential for college and adulthood.
  • Spiritual Growth: Providing space for reflection and purpose, rooted in the values of compassion, integrity, and faith.

Our Commitment

Oak Hill Academy is not a clinical setting, but it is a community of care. Every meal shared, every conversation after class, and every moment of encouragement contributes to an environment where students can flourish. We believe that by nurturing the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—we empower students to grow into confident, capable young adults ready to lead with character and compassion.
