What Does a Boarding School Advisor Do? Oak Hill’s Mentorship Model

A boarding school education is different from a traditional school experience in many ways. One of the most meaningful differences is the opportunity to learn and grow within a close-knit community, not only during class, but throughout the evening and night hours. When students live and learn together, moments for guidance, encouragement, and personal growth can arise naturally in everyday life.

At Oak Hill Academy, many faculty and staff members live on campus and take part in students’ daily routines. Teachers may also be coaches, club sponsors, trip chaperones, and trusted advisors. These connections help students see that their teachers are more than the people who assign homework: They are caring adults who take an interest in students’ lives, student progress, and growth.

That sense of connection is at the heart of mentorship. When students know an adult well and trust them, it becomes easier to ask questions, work through challenges, and seek guidance. In a boarding school community, those relationships can take shape in simple, everyday moments, over dinner, during a brief conversation on the sidewalk, or at a weekend activity. These interactions can also strengthen student engagement by helping students feel known, included, and connected to their school community.

Oak Hill also creates intentional opportunities for students and faculty to connect through its mentorship program. The Advisory Program is one example. Each teacher works with a group of students, building relationships through regular check-ins and activities the group plans together, including trips off campus. Advisors also serve as homeroom teachers, connecting with students each morning.

These relationships give students familiar adults they can turn to, alongside Oak Hill’s academic support staff, including the counselor and student support specialist, and its residential life team of dorm parents and deans. This network of student support helps make sure every student has a trusted point of contact when they face difficulty, uncertainty, or simply need someone to talk to. At Oak Hill, students are not expected to navigate the boarding school experience alone. We are here with them.

Mentorship in the Residence Halls

A student’s life is about more than the hours spent in the classroom. The routines, friendships, and challenges that fill the rest of the day are also important parts of growing up. At Oak Hill, the residence halls are designed to be places of belonging, positive routine, and comfort, not simply buildings where students sleep.

Oak Hill’s students live in five boys’ dormitories and one larger girls’ dormitory. Each dormitory, and each floor in the larger dorm, has a live-in resident manager, known at Oak Hill as a dorm parent. Dorm parents provide supervision and structure, but their role also involves getting to know students, offering steady guidance, and helping them solve problems and adjust to boarding school life.

Lessons That Extend Beyond the Classroom

Athletics offer another important opportunity for mentorship and personal growth. Oak Hill’s program includes seasonal sports with opportunities for broad participation, as well as year-round, elite athletic development in basketball and soccer. In each setting, coaches have the chance to support students as athletes and as people.

Sports can teach lessons in teamwork, commitment, resilience, and responding to challenges. For students with college or professional athletic aspirations, preparation extends beyond practices and competition. Coaches help students understand the work, choices, and growth that those goals can require. These experiences can also contribute to college readiness, helping students develop habits and skills they can carry into the next stage of life.

A Community That Supports the Whole Student

A boarding school experience can offer students a distinctive kind of support: caring adults who are present across many parts of daily life. Personal growth happens not only in class, but also as students build relationships, follow routines, try new activities, and learn to meet challenges away from home.

Oak Hill Academy recognizes how important mentorship is to that growth. Through the Advisory Program, residential life, athletics, and everyday interactions across campus, students have opportunities to build meaningful relationships with adults who care about their well-being and success. That’s what makes mentorship such an important part of the Oak Hill experience.
