If you’ve ever wondered what life at a boarding school is really like, Oak Hill Academy offers a perfect example of how structure, academics, athletics, and community come together in a balanced daily routine. For student-athletes in particular, the schedule is carefully designed to allow them to develop their craft without compromising academic success or social growth.
Early Morning: Getting a Head Start

For many student-athletes, the day begins long before sunrise. The gym opens at 5:30 AM for early-morning individual skill sessions, giving basketball players, soccer athletes, and others the opportunity to get a head start. In these sessions, students work on everything from shooting and ball handling to position-specific drills. Coaches provide guidance and feedback, helping each athlete maximize their early-morning workout.
The strength and conditioning center is also open during this time, allowing students from all sports to focus on building endurance, strength, and agility. By the time breakfast arrives, many athletes have already accomplished more than most high school students achieve in an entire day.
Soccer and Basketball: Maximizing Athletic Development

Soccer players in the PSG Academy Pro Residency follow a similarly structured routine. Early-morning sessions focus on technical skill work, while afternoon practices, from 3:00 to 5:30 PM, center on full-team development, including tactical exercises and game scenarios. Strength and conditioning or recovery activities are built into the school day in place of standard P.E., and film and tactical sessions during the afternoon team meeting give players a deeper understanding of game strategy.
Basketball and other sports programs follow a similar balance, ensuring that each student-athlete can grow both individually and as part of a team.
Starting the School Day: Community and Purpose

The school day officially begins after breakfast, with dismissal at 8:10 AM. Students and staff gather in the Chapel for homeroom, a meaningful tradition that reinforces community and sets the tone for the day ahead. A short prayer led by the campus minister or another community member offers a moment of reflection, reminding students of God’s love and purpose.
Following the prayer, a brief, positive message is shared to inspire focus and personal growth. Daily announcements and recognition of students, teams, and campus groups ensure everyone is aligned and informed.
Academics: Focused Learning and Organization

Oak Hill Academy follows a classic U.S. high school schedule with seven 50-minute class periods. Meeting each class daily helps students maintain a productive rhythm, while five-minute passing periods allow for smooth transitions.
Two lunch periods provide time to recharge, and a dedicated “academic focus” period offers students an opportunity to check email, meet with teachers, consult academic advisors, and manage administrative tasks. This structured pause ensures students stay organized and on top of their responsibilities.
Afternoon Activities: Clubs, Sports, and Free Time

After the academic day ends, students transition into a busy afternoon filled with clubs, athletic practices, off-campus trips, and additional academic support. Most students return to their dorms first, changing out of school uniforms and preparing for their next activities.
If there is a free moment, the school store, open from 4:00 to 5:30 PM, offers a place to socialize, grab a snack, or pick up essentials for dorm life. This combination of structured activity and optional free time encourages independence and decision-making.
Evening Routine: Dinner and Study Hall

Dinner, served from 6:00 to 6:45 PM, brings the campus together again, offering a moment of community and reflection after a full day. The evening continues with a flexible two-hour block during which students may attend club meetings, practices, or enjoy personal free time.
At 8:30 PM, dorm curfew begins, cell phones are turned in, and dorm study halls provide a structured environment where students can complete homework, review material, and prepare for the next day.
Lights Out: Rest and Recovery

Study hall transitions directly into “lights out,” with underclassmen expected in bed by 10:30 PM and seniors by 11:30 PM. Adequate rest is critical for both academic and athletic performance. This routine also maintains an organized dorm environment and reinforces good time management habits.
By the end of the day, students have moved through classes, practices, extracurricular activities, and social interaction, building discipline, independence, and a sense of accomplishment.
Lights Out: Rest and Recovery

From a broader perspective, the daily schedule at Oak Hill Academy reflects the balance of a classic boarding school experience and the unique needs of student-athletes. Intentional pockets of free time allow students to practice decision-making, prioritization, and time management, skills that will serve them in college and beyond.
Every element of the day, from early-morning training to evening study hall, is designed to help students grow academically, athletically, and personally. Oak Hill Academy doesn’t just prepare students for high school success; it equips them with the habits, discipline, and resilience needed to thrive in life
